ISBA’s New Board Member Academy kicks off in January! The New Board Member Academy is designed to equip school board members with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to govern effectively. Participants start by attending one of five in-person sessions in January or February covering the essential basics of school board service, including public meeting procedures, superintendent relations, and legal roles and responsibilities. The dates and locations for the in-person component are below. Each session runs from 10:00 am - 4:00 pm (local time). Jan. 11 - La Porte - Kesling Intermediate School Jan. 18 - Fort Wayne - Ivy Tech Fort Wayne Coliseum Campus Feb. 1 - Indianapolis - Central Indiana Educational Service Center (virtual option also available) Feb. 8 - Columbus - Columbus North High School Feb. 22 - Jasper - Jasper High School Following the in-person sessions, learners will attend a monthly sequence of live virtual clinics from March through June, each covering a specific topic, such as policy-making, the Open Door Law, and school funding. The schedule of live virtual clinics is as follows (all times are EST): March 4, noon, or March 11, 6:30 p.m. - Public Access April 9, noon, or April 14, 6:30 p.m. - Policy Making May 15, 6:30 p.m. or May 20, noon - Budgets & Funding June 2, noon, or June 3, 6:30 p.m. - Six-Month Checkup All of the in-person and virtual sessions are recorded and made available on demand — ensuring you can learn on a schedule that fits your needs. Not a new board member? No problem. This program is also a great refresher curriculum for veteran members.
